I know there are different varieties, but the Orval I tried had some strange licorice type flavor.

I never actually tried licorice, so I have no idea if that's the same type of flavour as I'm used to.

To the best of my knowledge Orval comes only in one flavour though - other beers like Chimay, Grimbergen, Westmalle, Rochefort, ... do come in different varieties.
