Do I remember wrong, or did violinists used to look like this ...

...instead of this?

If Isaac Stern had looked like Anne Sophie Mutter, I wouldn't have objected; as long as the playing is good, no harm done.

But all the new hitmakers seem to have been picked for sex appeal rather than music. Anybody else notice this?

If Ella Fitzgerald was just starting out now, would anybody listen to her?

How about Aretha Franklin?

The Kinks have one of the strongest greatest hits out there, in my opinion.

I have never fentured further than my Greatest Hits CD, but I think it's time that I do! One of their songs is currently on a tv advert, called 'Shangri-la' - it's a brilliant song. The same came be said for 'There's something about that girl' which can be found on the 'Rushmore' soundtrack. These two songs are the reason why I HAVE to get some more Kinks songs.

So, what album shall it be then?

I love both albums. I feel that Vol3 has got a little bit of an unfair reputation... Yes Orbison is missing, leaving a quite a big hole, but it's still a great fun album nonetheless.

Both albums are pure fun. It's funny, it seems that a great number of friends of mine know the Wilburys music much better than Dylan's... both albums seem to have been real favourites of people's childhoods.

Favourite Wilbury song is 'Tweeter and the Monkey Man'.

WHY MEXICANS HATED ELVIS!

May 1959: While Elvis Presley’s popularity in the U.S. was arguably at its all-time peak, Mexico was in the midst of a huge anti-Elvis backlash.

Tijuana tabloids called him a racist and homosexual, after the singer reportedly told gossip columnist Federico de León "I'd rather kiss three black girls than a Mexican." A Mexican woman in the same column was quoted saying "I'd rather kiss three dogs than one Elvis Presley.”

There are days when I think this album is better than both MOONDANCE and ASTRAL WEEKS. But it's nowhere near as wildly known as the other two, and doesn't seem as criticial acclaimed either. Why? Maybe it's because it was released only a month previous to the somewhat worshipped 'It's Too Late to Stop Now...' double album?

Here's a rather loving review from John Kennedy in PopMatters (on wiki)

Here's one example: In the film "Crush" a church organist boasts that he is able to make anyone cry with music. He doesn't say that he himself is moved when he does it, he simply knows how--how to push people's emotional buttons.

A reverse example: Jerry Jeff Walker once complained that he has on and off nights--sometimes he's into it, but when he isn't, people complain that he's not as good, that he seems bored or irritated. They want him to "at least look like he's having ...

I went and got my fist stuck in another tar baby over at the other place. But it's not a total loss, because I found out where Rosie the Riveter is--the Potomac Place Assisted Living Facility.

She fled Czechoslovakia in the 1930s at the age of 13, and she's the one that gave me the Perez Prado records.

So, here she is:

Like I told the people at that other place, I know her hair was dark in the Rosie-the-riveter poster, but that was then, and this is now.

I started a thread on him a while back, but I can't seem to find it.

Is anyone else here a big fan of this great man?

It is clear to anyone how much of an influence Hawkins was as a live-performer, due to the theatrics and whatnot, but I can't help but think that he was, and still is, greatly underappreciated as a recording artist. His voice and turn of phrase really is second to none, a truely magnificent singer, as well as a brilliant performer.

This 1966 novelty record mocking the mentally ill was a Top 5 hit in the US and UK singles charts. Its B-side consisted of the A-side played- and the label printed- backwards.

Creator Jerry Samuels based the record on the old Scottish tune "The Campbells Are Coming".

It tells the story of a man who gets put in a mental institution after his wife ("that mangy mutt") is unfaithful to him.

Wikipedia observes that the record did actually cause a good deal of protest ...

I've just been looking at the list of acts that are to play at the Bristol Colston Hall in the near future. Some of the prices are quite varied, and a little strange IMO. For example, to see Joan Baez one would have to pay £38, but to see Motorhead one would have to pay £25. Why such a big gap? I find it hard to believe that there is such an obvious difference in the demand to see Baez over Motorhead. In fact, to be honest I thought there would be more demand to see Motorhead. Both of them ...

Anyone listen to Tchaikovsky ballet music, Prokofiev....?

Before I had children, every Wednesday afternoon when the troop was in NY, I used to get a standing-room ticket to see the performances of American Ballet Theater. The house was never full, and when the lights went down, the rope minders would open the gate, and we would all get orchestra seats.

I'm not a crying type person at all, but the performances of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet would have me in tears. Julio ...

This is a terrific documentary (in my opinion) and certainly one of my favourite "rock" documentaries. I think Julien Temple did a top-notch job with the film, and it's certainly more interesting than his first Pistols outing 'The Great Rock N Roll Swindle'. Like Scorsese's 'No Direction Home', it still buys into the myth a little bit, but it also manages to cut out a huge amount of bullshit that has surrounded the band for many years.
