This guy was a genius. Great voice and very chilled. I find his music quite depressing, I've never been able to work out whether it was just down to his music or because of the story of his sad death. His death seems in such contrast to they way he conducted himself on record.

From wiki:

After touring for a year, Ace had been performing at the City Auditorium in Houston, Texas on Christmas 1954. During a break between sets, under the influence of angel dust (PCP) Ace allegedly ...

No I'm not talking about Ali G, I'm talking about Syl Johnson. 'Is It Because I'm Black' has always been my favourite album of his, released in 1969. Here is the title track: http://www.sendspace.com/file/g2bbti

On the same album he also covered The Beatles song 'Come Together'. It's pretty cool actually.

Syl's most famous song (IMO), 'Different Strokes', has been sampled by Wu-Tang Clan and more importantly MC HAMMER!

Anyone else a fan?

Paul Rogers has always been such a soulful vocalist. He still sounds great, especially if you consider his age. Unlike many of his contemporaries, screaming wasn't his forte. They are an embarrassment and he is still going strong.

Hurdy Gurdy anyone?

James Brown "Hell" (1974) 2 LPs. Down load here: http://the-roadhouse-viander.blogspot.com/2008/05/james-brown-hell-1974.html

JB's wildest album, with a crazy cover that shows him running away from the devil, and great gatefold inner photo with him standing amidst a bunch of declarations of "Hell". Weird mix of music, but includes the epic 13 minute version of "Papa Don't Take No Mess", as tight and jamming as any cut from Doin' It to Death or The Payback.
