I read that the song "Amazing Grace" had been forgotten in the UK until the 1960s folk revival, at which time it made it's way back to the UK from the US. I also read that all those old hymns were in a hymn book assembled by Isaac Watts, that was taken to the American colonies and provided to the slaves.

One of the Isaac Watts hymns was "Dark was the Night." The words were something like:

"Dark was the night

John Kolstad, legendary Minneapolis bluesman and founder of the Sorry Muthas jug band, is making Minneapolis history by becoming the only Republican-endorsed mayoral candidate ever to challenge the Democrats--from the left.

Papa John thinks Minnesota Democrats are too conservative, so he tried running for attorney general as a Green Party candidate, but he only got 2% of the vote. That taught him a lesson--major party is the only way to go. That's why he's gone out for a more heavy-duty ...

If you got an older one, I'm all ears.

A songwriter called Trevathan published this in 1895 and claimed authorship, but W.C. Handy claimed he heard stevedores singing it in St. Louis in 1892 (Handy's not very reliable, tho).

Handy used this format--12-bar verse with 16-bar chorus--for his pwn biggest hit, "St. louis Blues."

Here's the oldest recording, by the woman that sang the song on Broadway:

Here's an off-Broadway rendition by Gid Tanner and the Skillet ...

The question (posed by Viv Stanshall of the Bonzos) receives at least a partial answer from Chris Stamp, co-Manager of The Who, in the excellent Who retrospective DVD "Amazing Journey".

Stamp relates how their pregnant mother turned up at the office as usual with all the other wives to collect her Merchant Seaman husband's pay during WWII only to be informed:

#1. Everyone knows that having "the blues" means you're feeling bad. Maybe your good gal have done you wrong, maybe you're broke and hungry and ragged and dirty too, maybe you done your good gal wrong and she shot you right in the middle of your big affair. The point is, the blues ain't nothin' but a good man/gal feelin' bad.
