"Running, Jumping, Standing Still" (1969) and "Stargeezer" (1996) rank with his best.

"Good Old Koerner, Ray & Glover" is a mega-rare privately-produced LP. It was recorded live at some Minnesota folk festivals. Not high-quality sound, and some of it is pretty sloppy, but there are 2 or 3 excellent tracks.

In the early-mid 1960s, KR&G didn't really perform as an ensemble much--they were two soloists and a harp player. They were fine instrumentalists, but they wrote too many original songs that weren't as good as the no doubt thought.

As they grew older (starting in 1968) they concentrated more on the best songs they could find by old timers, and they wrote far fewer original songs--but much better ones.

The KR&G comeback album--"One Foot In The Groove" (1967)--has them playing much more as an ensemble, and they're in fine form.

You said Dilly lifted much of WGW from the gang. Did they ever do Love Henry or Bloody Eyes or Wrong World?

I wouldn't say he necessarily "lifted" anything, it was just that Bob recorded two albums of old folk and blues tunes in the early '90s, and Dave Ray mentioned that happened right after Bob performed in Minneapolis with Ray and Glover as the warm-up act. He said something like "Bob must have liked it, because he recorded a lot of the same songs on his next two albums," i.e., both WGW and GAIBTY.

I have no idea what Ray and Glover played before Bob's shows, I only know what I've heard them play and what they've recorded, and I can only point to 5 matches:
-- Delia
-- Blackjack Davey
-- Sittin' on Top of the World
-- Tommorrow Night
-- Froggie Went a-Courting

So, I don't know if Ray was doing those before Bob played, but he could have been doing either those or anything else on WGW and GAIBTY, because those two albums both have the kind of thing that KR&G do.

I think I have a list somewhere of all the songs sung by Bob at one time or another that KR&G also put on records, either together or by themselves. I don't know where the list is, but here's a sampling (I think Bob did all of these--although not all on WGW and GAIBTY):

Down to Louisiana
Dust My Broom
One Kind Favor
Black Jack Davey
Two Trains
Travelin' Blues
Fixin' to Die
House of the Rising Sun
Delia
Baby Please Don't Go
Days of '49
Jack of Diamonds
When First unto this country
32-20
Froggy Went a-Courtin'
Sitting on Top of the World
Golden Vanity
Tomorrow Night

Of course, they also played many songs that they never put on record, so that list is only a fraction of what they could have in common with Bob.

I wouldn't accuse Bob of "lifting" any of those, because they're just the songs that 60s folkies all learned and performed.

I see that back in May of '08 I said "Most of the songs on those 2 albums [WGW and GAIBTY] appeared on KR&G recordings at some or other between 1962 and 1992."

I must have got carried away--5 out of 23 isn't quite "most." (oops)

Thanks for the info, on what album did the boys do Days of 49? I've only heard the Dylan version, which I think is swell.

Dylan's version of World Gone Wrong is close to the Missi Sheiks version but his Bloody Eyes is fairly different from the Sheiks. I wonder if he made that up all by himself or swiped it from someone else.

There's a remix of Jack O Diamonds on the Another Side liner notes, but I don't think I've heard Dilly sing the song.

Koerner did "Days of '49" twice.

First on "Some American Folk Songs ...." and later on "Stargeezer."

The first one has a wonderful squeezebox accompaniment by Willie Murphy. The 2nd one sounds like it's accompanied by just a bodran and some other percussion.

Mighty fine album.

But I think "Half Cocked and Fully Loaded" (featuring Dave Ray) is even better: http://www.liquorpigs.com/recordings.html
