I have a question: What am I take from the Susan Boyle show? That if you aren't one of the beautiful people but you stun folk with your pretty voice then you will be accepted and will no longer be the butt of a joke?

Many are the pundits who have pondered and pontificated over that question, but I think they have generated more smoke than light.

A hefty middle-aged singer that sings well generally will not be laughed at after she sings, but she will not get a multi-CD contract with Sony either.

Good singers are a glut on the market. Even good singers that are hotties are a glut on the market. They need something to make themselves stand out from the huge crowd of hotties that can sing. Otherwise, they'll just become part of the chorus of hotties dancing behind Beyonce.

Maybe the answer is that, to be noticed, you have to do something unexpected--and there's no way to plan something unexpected, because if it's planned it's not unexpected. Where is the genius hypemeister who could have planned an audition videoclip that compresses the plot of "Rocky" down to 7 minutes? It could only happen as a lucky accident (although the editors clearly knew how to make the most of it when the recognized what they had in the raw film footage). Now there are all kinds of performers trying to repeat the effect, but it won't work, because after the first time it's not unexpected--it would be formulaic.

Maybe the lesson is that your big break into show biz can't be planned--you have to get lucky. Maybe if you try out for everything at every opportunity, and keep it up for 25 years, you might get lucky one day and get your big break. Or not. More likely not.

But as they say in Las Vegas, you won't win if you don't play. Subo had been doing competitions and tryouts for 25 years:

Whatevers. Good for her. She pressed on and made something of herself in the game. Made for good t.v.--it's the stuff of fairy tales. Still, the Sobo talent show was yet another example of how suck ass aspects of humanity are.
