| I think '39 was Artie Shaw's year (he only had one). I might have the year wrong, my memories have got a bit fuzzy. _________________ I don't do it for the money, babe. I do it to entertain people.-- Susan Boyle

| No 1 records of 1939? Well, there were no charts in the UK, so the US of A will have to suffice Artie Shaw had two No 1 hits - "They Say" and "Thanks For Ev'rything". His biggest hit was "Frenesi" in 1940. Glenn Miller had six - count 'em! - No 1s, so John's guess is pretty good; they were "Wishing (Will Make It So)", "Stairway To The Stars", "Moon Love", "Sunrise Serenade", "Over The Rainbow", "Th Man With The Mandolin" and "Blue Orchids". "String of Pearls" hit in 1941. _________________ I'm hoping for a computer game.

| Based on overall sales, it looks like Glenn Miller won in 1939: 1939 -- "Moonlight Serenade" 1940 -- "When You Wish Upon A Star" by Ukulele Ike (with Artie Shaw's "Frenesi" in 3rd place). _________________ I don't do it for the money, babe. I do it to entertain people.-- Susan Boyle

| Ah, Glenn Miller's "Moonlight Serenade...." I slow-danced to that in 1957, on El Cumpleanos de Amor (St Valentine's Day), on a flat rooftop in Tampico, with Christmas lights all around, with a very sweet and pretty young senorita, who was headed for the U Texas in Brownsville the following year and was using my Scots-English as practice for her lilting Mexican-English. She probably married into the Bush family and is a great-grandmother by now.... |
