I never understood that term either.
The music that's supposed to be 'alternative' could easily be called 'rock' period.

Alternative refers to a style of rock music popularized in the early 1990s that was viewed as an alternative to the rock music of the day.

Previously popular rock music:

New alternative:

Music now labeled alternative is viewed as somehow following in the tradition shown in the second photo. The alternative is mopey, odd, self-doubting whereas as the un-alternative is characterized by brash, macho swagger, reproductive fitness, and wailing solos. Musically, the alternative uses dissonance and grating-ness more often.

While I like my definition more, I think Uzi has a point.

Self-pitying, self-obsessed middle-class kids who listened too often to Dark Side of the Moon and who imagine Iggy Pop has talent.

I don't like U2, nor do I enjoy bands that sound like them. Does that make me against Hope and Change?

I do enjoy Iggy, though. "Talent" is such an odd word for the popular arts. I mean, lots of the "artists" I enjoy most could never pass the entrance examination to any self-respecting art college. And lots of the technically dexterous "artists" don't do a thing for me.

Sounds like something to ask oldmanemu, or, failing that, The Coin.

Some things are native others are alter-native. The coin says yes. It always says yes.

What about "alt country?"

To me, this just sounds like Roger McGuinn with a chick singer:
