| With all this focus on the Kazakhs, I fear I've been neglecting the Uzbeks: _________________ I don't do it for the money, babe. I do it to entertain people.-- Susan Boyle

| I still haven't seen the whole movie, but I think I've seen enough clips to get the idea. I get the impression that Borat was interacting with basically nice, polite people that were trying to be hospitable to a foreign visitor, and also trying to be nonjudgmental and accepting of his customs and beliefs, however different they might seem from their own. They were also trying to avoid any unpleasant scenes in front of a camera crew filming a documentary about a foreign visitor, and Borat's aim was to make this situation as uncomfortable as possible for the people trying to be nice to him. It made me think of a quote from Mark Twain: "When grown-up persons indulge in practical jokes, the fact gauges them. They have lived narrow, obscure, and ignorant lives, and at full manhood they still retain and cherish a job-lot of left-over standards and ideals that would have been discarded with their boyhood if they had then moved out into the world and a broader life." I could see the reaction of the proprietress in the bar where he sang "Throw the Jew down the well." She looked up startled and apprehensive, and appeared to be considering how she could get him off stage without a scene. In the end, she clapped along with the rest off them, she probably figured she'd get off easiest by just letting him finish and leave. She probably also noted that he seemed quite innocent about his anti-semitism--having evidently been raised that way--and figured that someone raised in a culture were that was acceptable was unlikely to understand any admonitions from her. So as long as no one in the bar seemed to be offended, she just let it go and pretend it never happened. And, after all, he was a guest; you have to make allowances for guests. Cruel irony, the way it turned out. She could have strode over to the stage, told Borat she'd have none of that in her establishment and ordered him off the stage. If she did that, the whole episode probably would have ended up on the cutting room floor. Too bad she didn't know that. _________________ I don't do it for the money, babe. | But, if a friendly, smiling Kazakhstani ever comes to visit your saloon in Texas, and says he'd like to sing a few songs and make a film of the experience, you'll run him off the premises with a shot gun, right? _________________ I don't do it for the money, babe. | If I had those Fancy Quoting privileges like some other posters have I would "quote" Pinhedz'z second to last post and maybe even his last post and hit the 'Agree' button. But I don't so I won't. _________________ This isn't the 'so called' Warbleshinny Mastadon. Over
