Overly fond of whiskey. His father didn't like him.

What was there about him for a solid middle-class German father to like? He flunked out of the academy his father sent him to, he wanted to play music, but he didn't even learn to read it, and, as you say, he couldn't lay off the sauce.

But he could do no wrong on his horn. Seems like he just never learned how to do anything wrong on it.

His bandmates would write "Wake up Bix" at certain points in their musical notation, as Bix would pass out if inactive for too long during performances.

Someone should have told him "If you can just stay alive until you're over 30, maybe someone will get some video of you to put on youtube."

He was a disgrace to the name Leon Bismark Beiderbecke

My hometown is the birthplace of Bix. Every summer there's a big jazz festival with his name attached. Musicians and fans come from all over the world for the hoopla. The setting is a park on the banks of the Mississippi River.

Wish'd that town wasn't so far away. Sad

Yes, I guess it would take you a couple days to drive there Pinz, but you could fly into Moline International Airport Laughing , just a quick hop over the river. The festival lasts for 3 days, not only on the river site, but the whole Quad City area gets in on the deal, various venues spread out, even jazz church services on Sunday.

I remember years ago being annoyed at all the big fuss about Bix and the fact that this genre of music was getting so much "legitimate" attention, while any chance of seeing any big, or even semi-big, rock groups close by was practically nil. Now that I have a better appreciation of a wider range of music, I can see that it's pretty cool to have such an event happening each year in little old Davenport IA.

Interesting record, this here. Probably not what Geoff Muldaur's fans were expecting:

I should say; it's got to be way better than the annual Bob Dylan sound-alike contest in Hibbing, MN. Laughing
