How came it that this terrifying hag was allowed to frighten young children?

Really, I don't see how you can say that. I loved Beatrix Potter when I was a child and my children like her books.

It's true that Benjamin Bunny gets switched, but its not scary.

The Tale of Tom Kitten is adorable, and so is Jemimah Puddle Duck.

I think the illustrations are wonderful, and the size of the books is charming.

Now, the one I can't understand is Dr. Seuss. I've never liked him at all I used to think the Grinch was scary. I won't read him to my children.

Her books amused me a bit as a kid, I liked the naughty kittens. They were beautifully ilustrated

I was reading about her involvement with Charles Booth and his surveys of East London, seems she played quite a part in his research into London's poverty.
