I agree it's a fascinating language, with an extremely high degree of regularity in its syntactic system. There used to be a "Spanish Made Simple" book, using which, with a Spanish Reader's Digest and a Spanish issue of Look Magazine, I taught myself enough Spanish to get along with, and eventually into college classes in Spanish. Buena suerte, amigo.

I had a teacher named Mr. Clark. He grew up in Chicago, where the Spanish speakers lived not too far from the Irish speakers at the time. He taught us a song:

"Una cosa me da risa,
Pancho Villa sin camisa,
Mas se van los Caranzistas,
Porque vienan los Villistas."

"La cucaracha, la cucaracha,
y no puede caminar,
porque le falta, porque no tiene
Marijuana que fumar."

Yes, Pancho Villa's ninos liked to sing about the cockroach needing cannabis to feel his best, as a marching song. And the Mexicans loved to smoke cannabis, which they called marijuana. A lot of Mexicans moved to America and smoked marijuana and so lawmakers said, "hmm, these damn Mexicans sure seem to like smoking this marihuana weed, so there must be something wrong with it. Looks like they got these colored jazz players and pimps smoking the stuff too, hell, we really should criminalize it." And thus it became a controlled substance.

THANKS A LOT, MEXICANS.

Before Mr. Clark, when we were just little niños too young to sing about cannabis, there was Don Miguel, with his two puppets, Paco y Maria:

-- Paco, pon la television.
-- Que canal, al dos?
-- No, al cinco; Ay una pelicula.
-- No quieres ver al Pato Pasqual?
-- Bueno, me da lo mismo.

[Paco pone la television]

-- Mira, como salta!
-- Se cay, se cay, ai! Se cayó!

[Long-term memory is a funny thing. ]

I'm not sure how much it reveals about the interesting complexities of Spanish, but it certainly seems to amuse you, so I suppose that'll do.

It just shows I had entertaining teachers.
