PostSubject: Devils you have known   Wed Nov 04, 2009 8:54 pm

It would be inappropriate to follow up the "Favourite Saints" thread with a "Favorite Devils" thread for a number of quite obvious reasons, not least because a list consisting of Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot and all the usual suspects would be too predictable.

So let's confine this to people you have known personally who have acted badly and whom you find it impossible to forgive.

There's an interesting connection here with the "Saints" thread because "Forgiving your Enemies" is what's going to get you to Heaven (if such a place exists at all).

The words of the Lord's Prayer with which I've always had most difficulty are:

"Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us".

Either I'm an unusually vengeful person -which is quite possible- or there are some people I can't bring myself to forgive because I just consider their actions, words and general behaviour beyond the pale.

My own nomination is a particular Station Supervisor with whom I had the great misfortune to work for a while. I'll call him DF.

DF was a lethal combination of arrogance and stupidity. Almost every decision he took put his colleagues in personal danger. This man was both a bully and a fool.

Another of his deplorable traits was the frequently-asserted claim to Christian righteousness. DF was a fundamentalist Christian whose world view had absolutely nothing in common -that I could detect-with the teachings of Jesus. In short, what he claimed to be his Religion was just another instrument of his Bullying. A sanctimonious hypocrite.

Lastly- and I never established this to my complete satisfaction- I very strongly suspected this man of paedophilia. I base this solely on my observation of his treatment of those school children who had the misfortune to cross his path. Whether his interest in them was sexual I have no definite proof, but all I can say is that some very unpleasant power transaction of some kind was going on there.

I exhausted the grievance/disciplinary procedure with this man, and got exactly nowhere.

Thankfully, I no longer have to work with this creep, but I'm fairly certain- at this stage of my life anyway- that I'll hate him till the day I die.

Bang go my prospects of Heaven, then.

Me too. I've had a couple of right basterts provoke me beyond belief, and I still know their names and faces. I'd like to think I got over most of it, but I still think the swine deserved a good punch-up, which I held off on giving them until too late. Go to Heaven for being Mr Nice Guy? Regretfully, I think I missed my chance a long time ago.

My father.

Bad thing is that I'm very well aware that 50% of me is him.
Not always a nice thing to look in the mirror and see what you sworn you would never be - it doesn't happen too much, thank ... uhm ... Darwin ... , but it's something that sets you back with your both feet in reality when it does.

Debra Cagan. You can google for details, but if you do, I just want to say she's bad, but not that bad. Bloggers and journalists can't handle real people with their complexity and ambiguity, so they create cartoon demons.

I won't say his name, though i'm sure it's not his real name anyway.

I recently visited a local discussion forum to which I have been a member since probably '99. There were lots of new faces. One in particular poster was quite aggressive...a lefty/anarchist type. So I engaged him in a discussion, of sorts. I asked him a few questions, being light hearted, having a bit of fun...playing naive and dumb(seriously, it's most often an act). Backed into a corner, he starts with the insults...lack of education, ignorant of the facts, "you're gay", etc....even going so far as to invite me to his house to, ahem, pleasure him. So, backed into a corner, this guy searches way back in the archives to learn more about me. He discovers that I had participated in a discussion about cancer years earlier wherein I had mentioned my wife's surgery to remove a growth in her breast. So he says,..

"Hey, I heard your wife had a chunk removed, how's your wife's tit doing? Got any pictures for the boys?"

Admittedly, I was pissed. I told him I would be glad to take him up on his offer to come to his house, but it would not be a pleasurable experience for him. He rescinded the invitation. I'd still like to get my hands on that guy and make him squeal like a little girl.

As a side note, although what he said should be viewed by all as a disgusting statement, he received support from some of his "online friends" and buddies. Odd how that works, huh?

I have seen an actual devilish little creature attached to my knees in the Maudsley Hospital - an hallucination, maybe.....

but that's another story.....

my adoptive mother was (is?) really nasty to me and my older brother.....her son......was too

but, well, I have forgiven them now.....I always forgive everyone......

part of the reason they tried to hurt me was because I was so stubborn and wouldn't bend....I called her out on her hypocrisy and lies....

I guess you could say I've changed now......I'm more relaxed......

For the perfect illustration of how nurturing grudges down the years can make you look like an idiot, see Father Ted's acceptance speech for the "Golden Cleric" Award in the Christmas Special edition of the eponymous series.

I can't find it online, but all I need say is that Ted's over-long, vengeful speech- settling old scores- sends most of his audience to sleep.

Yeah, grudges suck. Hopefully that is something we can all agree upon.

A very astute observation.

It's quite frightening when you start recognising the traits you deplored in your parents in yourself. Nature? Nurture? Personally, I think it's unlikely you'll ever completely escape from your genetic history.

At my brothers suggestion, who is not at all an internet guy, I recently joined facebook. I discovered that alot of my old friends from high school were already on facebook. I was somewhat shocked at how much they resembled their fathers as I remember them.

I see my father in my eyes at times..a quick glimpse and double-take in the mirror. My dad had/has intense eyes, especially when unhappy. It kind of gives me a start when I see it in the mirror...never looking for it. My dad is very dark complected...part Indian down the line. My mother is a redhead, and still beautiful, if I do say so myself. I'm a mutt...blonde, somewhat broad face, eyes hazel and at most times welcoming and cheery. But those other times. Don't get me wrong, my dad is a good guy...very personable, friendly, and kind. But can stare a fright into you at times.

This seems to be more of a Pricks and Bitches thread than a Devil thread. Or even a Demon thread.

Jerks you never liked has very little to do with Da Debil.
