I do think about and worry about my cyber friends just as much as I do my 3-D friends.
I sometimes naively forget that people can present themselves however they choose on the internet, something that I personally don't have the creativity to do. What you see is what you get with me.
you are all part of my life, for better or worse. |
me too, tigerlily.
at least i am not alone.

| Once or twice I've attempted to describe various village cyber-dramas to real-life friends and colleagues and have been met with: 1. Kindly indulgence. 2. Incomprehension. MY EXPERIENCE EXACTLY I'll admit to a certain curiosity about some posters here and on other boards, but- since so much of our lives tends to be revealed here anyway- I wonder whether we'd have much to say to one another if we met tete a tete? I feel I would disappoint anyone I met in person whom I met in cyberspace. The people I live with and am friendly with talk so much and interrupt so much, I have become someone with very little to say, and very very little to say eloquently. Q.- Who are we really speaking to when we post here? A.- Ourselves. Discuss. The same question is, why do we go to the trouble of putting our thoughts on paper and choosing, instead of the erase button, to hit the Send button? We definitely write to articiulate our thoughts to ourselves. But I think that after a certain age, talking face to face with people brings with it a kind of sadness, because you sense that the person listening is only waiting for you to stop talking until its their chance to talk again. I say "after a certain age" because I think college age and younger people are happy to talk away and are ego-centric (not in a bad away)enough to not think too much about being heard. When we become older, we are more experienced and put more into what we're saying, and feel more responsible for what we're saying. At the same time, we're discovering that many people don't really listen. Writing in a forum is writing to a fantasy, a perfect listener. I too am curious about certain posters and am amazed when someone bothers to read my posts. Also, it seems to me that in the privacy of posting, character elements are revealed more than in real life with all the real life encumberances and distractions and self-consciousness. And I want to thank Tatiana for opening this topic and writing such thoughtful and brave comments and questions. Sometimes writing and posting feels to carry a sense of personal risk to it, and I think Tatiana was very good and bold to put this topic out in the open. I hope there is more discussion to this topic. |

| It's like f-2-f, really - some people you can open up to, but oher people you don't hit it off with nearly so well, and when they insult you I think you tend to say who needs this shit and hang it up for awhile. But then there are calm people who stay right where they were, and that makes up for the trigger-happy ones. Have you ever gone out of your way to meet f-2-f someone you'd met online? |

| Dharma Wheel, i often read your posts so that is okay... as with all posters, some are great, some are not. i started the thread because i was interested to see how other people felt about the subject of internet friendships, whether they are successful or not and whether they survive. and how much thought goes into them. whether it is easier to maintain a 3D relationshionship or a real relationship. do the emotions/dramas that interfere in real relationships happen in 3D | Quote: | | Also, it seems to me that in the privacy of posting, character elements are revealed more than in real life with all the real life encumberances and distractions and self-consciousness | i noticed this also.
and now i must ask, is the tattoo in your AV one you have or just a picture you like? i think it is beautiful.... |

| john, it is easier to ignore comments on line than in real life... and yes, i would meet some if i had the chance, not just here but on other forums also. i know of one group who do meet and i would join in but it is in victoria which is a long way from where i live and i don't have anyone to look after my boys while i am away. i would if i had the chance though. some people here, i would travel to meet if the opportunity came up. others (around the forums etc), i wouldn't go near even if i was paid to, if they can be so horrible online, what would theybe like in real life? |
