| Gericault painted two versions of that scene. Art/Propoganda? Rum, Sodomy and the lash....Great album but the quote is just foolishness. _________________ This isn't the 'so called' Warbleshinny Mastadon. Over

| Plan of the actual raft, from which the few survivors were eventually rescued. Wikipedia certainly suggests a strong propaganda element in the work. The French frigate Meduse ran aground off the coast of Mauritania in 1816, largely due to the incompetence of the captain who was acting under the authority of the newly-restored French monarchy. The disaster became an international scandal. There were very few survivors and great suffering and loss of life. _________________ The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas

| To the best that I can recall, Gericault 'interviewed' a couple of the survivors. _________________ This isn't the 'so called' Warbleshinny Mastadon. Over

| The Pogues' selection of the Churchill quote about the traditions of the Royal Navy being "Rum, Sodomy & the Lash" could be interpreted as anti Brit propaganda. They certainly weren't averse to having a dig at the Empire in other work. I seem to recall that the Pogues returned to the image of the Raft of the Medusa in a song on the late album "Hell's Ditch"- the last recorded with Shane, I think- in which it's presented as (excuse the pun) a high-water mark of their work. _________________ The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas

| Actually, Churchill never said that. And Hell's Ditch is no where near the Pogues high water mark. By then it was mostly all over. _________________ This isn't the 'so called' Warbleshinny Mastadon. Over

1. I have to check, but I think he did. 2. No, RS&TL was the high-water mark, to which the song on "Hell's Ditch" nostalgically alludes. Sorry if I expressed that clumsily in my original post. _________________ The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas

| I may be wrong but I think it was some anonymous quote attributed to Sir Winston for silly reasons. _________________ This isn't the 'so called' Warbleshinny Mastadon. Over

| Thanks, Felix. Well, from the Pogues' perspective, Churchill- or his office- was the source of the quotation; they didn't pull it out of thin air. _________________ The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas

Yes, I've read that it wasn't actually him too. |

| 'Hell's Ditch' is a decent album, nothing more than that though. 'Rum, Sodomy and the Lash' is one of the greatest albums ever created, IMO. |

| It's up there with the best of their work certainly, but give me "If I Should Fall From Grace With God" for personal preference. _________________ The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas

| That's their second best. Lash wins thanks to 'Waltzing Matilda'. Oh, and 'Dirty Old Town'. Admittedly, they are both covers... but immense nonetheless. I forgot 'A Pair of Brown Eyes'. Okay, Im gonna go and listen to it. |
