| For anyone not familiar with the history of the London underworld in the 1960's, the Kray Twins were a pair of violent gangsters and protection racketeers who were eventually jailed for life for several murders. Ronnie was the psycho; Reg was more of a businessman, but the competitive spirit of twindom obliged him to keep pace with brother Ron's penchant for killing. John Pearson's "The Profession of Violence" is a very good book on the subject.

| Pearson, incidentally, has made a speciality of the study of families. In his book on the Churchills he makes the (unanswerable) case that Winston inherited his famous "Black Dog" bouts of depression as an hereditary condition, which he then passed on to his own offspring.
