| Hillbilly Shuffle: | Quote: | Songs for Drella is probably my favourite Lou Reed album and subsequently one of my favourite records ever. His guitar-playing on Drella is his best on record - at least for records with more or less conventional songs. The song 'Forever changed' - sung by John Cale - is one of the best songs ever written. Not a single Dylan song about change comes even close.
Good Lou Reed solo records are: Transformer, Berlin, Street Hassle, The Bells , The blue mask, Legendary hearts, New York, Songs for Drella, Magic and loss, Ecstasy, The Stone: Issue Three (w/ John Zorn & Laurie Anderson).
Records like Sally can't dance, Coney Island Baby (with a superb title track and a great speed-ballad 'Kicks'), Set the twilight reeling are okay-ish but not always very interesting.
Metal Machine Music, The Raven, Hudson River Wind Meditations and The Stone Issue Three are all concept-albums. Three of them are entirely instrumental, The Raven is a 2,5 hour spoken word-piece with rewritten text from E.A. Poe and a couple of songs - initially it was a theatre play and probably worked better that way. I like all 4 of them - though not equally and some not entirely - but they are obviously not for everybody.
Lou Reed has a lot of not so great versions of songs with some potential. A dissapointing solo debut. |
That pretty much nails it. _________________ Why couldn't Pheidippides have died at mile 20?

| This Drella seems to be an intriguing album, I've heard some of the tunes before in concerts. Only one issue - Cale should sing more songs, as I think everyone can agree he is more awesome than Lou Reed. _________________ The problem in defense is how far you can go without destroying from within what you are trying to defend from without.

| I went to catholic school from when I was 2,5 yrs till I was 18 yrs. There's a lot you can ask of me, Uzi Tootsie, but to stop making fun out of catholics really IS too much to ask. _________________ Le bon sens est la chose du monde la mieux partagée; car chacun pense en être si bien pourvu que ceux même qui sont les plus difficiles à contenter en toute autre chose n'ont point coutume d'en désirer plus qu'ils en ont.

| For conclusive proof, if further proof were needed, that Mr Reed is a complete shit, refer to John Cale's autobiography "What Welsh for Zen?" Reed's failure to attend fellow-Velvet Sterling Morrison's funeral service is very strange indeed, but, OK, some people don't like funerals. But his manipulation of others, his breaking of promises, his self-promotion....it all addds up to a thoroughly dislikable human being. |

| So who comes off worse, Reed or Eno? It appears that Mr Cale doesn't hold back. |

| I never saw any reaso to believe that Lou Reed is the nicest guy you could ever meet. But I have no intention to befriend him, I just happen to like a lot of his music. Btw, let's not be silly, Cale isn't exactely known as mr. Nice-Guy either. He's made some great music too. Anyway, Uzi, how did you like Drella? _________________ Le bon sens est la chose du monde la mieux partagée; car chacun pense en être si bien pourvu que ceux même qui sont les plus difficiles à contenter en toute autre chose n'ont point coutume d'en désirer plus qu'ils en ont.

| A piece I really like - it's the into to the song 'Riptide' from Set the twilight reeling, here used on itself as an instrumental piece to open the sublime duo-shows with Laurie Anderson in 2002. Later that year he played at some festival in the Bonnaroo festival and played the only-ever live version of 'Riptide' with the intro - previous live versions had been stripped from it, a truly rocking show. Anyway: _________________ Le bon sens est la chose du monde la mieux partagée; car chacun pense en être si bien pourvu que ceux même qui sont les plus difficiles à contenter en toute autre chose n'ont point coutume d'en désirer plus qu'ils en ont.

| I like Lou Reed's cover of Dylan's "Foot of Pride" at the 30th anniversary Bobfest. Credit where it's due for electing to perform one of Bob's strangest and most obscure songs. |
