Nobody

When life seems full of clouds an' rain
and I am filled with naught but pain,
who soothes my thumpin' bumpin' brain ?
Nobody . . .

When winter comes with snow an' sleet,
and me with hunger and cold feet,
who says " Ah, here's two bits, go an' eat!"
Nobody . . .

I ain't never done nothin' to nobody,
I ain't never got nothin' from nobody, no time!
And until I get somethin' from somebody, sometime,
I don't intend to do nothin' for nobody, no time!

When I try hard an' scheme an' plan,
to look as good as I can,
who says " Ah, look at that handsome man!"
Nobody . . .

When all day long things go amiss,
and I go home to find some bliss,
who hands to me a glowin' kiss?
Nobody . . .

I ain't never done nothin' to nobody,
I ain't never got nothin' from nobody, no time!
And until I get somethin' from somebody, sometime,
I don't intend to do nothin' for nobody, no time!

Nobody, no time!

That's the blues! Well, mayhap. That really is the 1913 re-recording of his 1906 No 1. According to my info, Bert, born 1874 in Nassau, West Indies, was the first black entertainer to become a headliner on Broadway, debuting in 1896 with partner George Walker.

There's an old comic song about a show-biz wannabe that has this line:

"He thought he was a corker,
Like Williams and Walker"

(In New Yawk,Wawkah rhymes with cawkah).

There's no doubt that the man singing "Nobody"
must have the blues, but I would argue the song does not belong to the
blues genre, because it grew out of a different tree with different
roots.

I'd say it's roots are music-hall and vaudeville (with a hint of Stephen Foster in the chorus)--the
same tree as George M. Cohan and other writers for the New York stage
around 1900.

I have the 1906 recording on CD, and I like it better. It doesn't have the overdone trombone smear, and I love the way he sings "Who says 'here's quaw-tah boy, now you'all go an' eat.' "
