I'm not Russian, but I used to spend a lot of time there.
The young man who disobeyed his mother will have lots of adventures (it's a long song) and will come home with the gold and a princess (which is what his mother really wanted all along).
There used to be story tellers that would sing these long songs about knights and dragons and gnomes and magic fish and firebirds. Some of the songs were epics, others were obscene. In the 17th century the clergy tried to eradicate them, because the songs were pagan.
