his guitar solo on 'maggot brain' is preposterous. one of the only things in terms of pure sonic insanity that can stand alongside hendrix's best stuff. apparently george clinton advised him to 'play like your mama just died' before he tore this one out of the stratosphere.

Eddie Hazel, one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. The pure emotion expressed in Maggot Brain is unbelievable. Aside from Maggot Brain, my favorite albums are Standing on the Verge of Getting it On, Funkadelic (their debut), and of course One Nation Under a Groove (which has Michael Hampton instead of Eddie Hazel).

Great BBC documentary about George Clinton/Parliament/Funkadelic to be found here: http://nightofthepurplemoon.blogspot.com/2008/02/george-clinton-tales-of-dr-funkenstein.htmlIn there a great story about the creatiion of that incredible Maggot Brain solo: Clinton had Eddie Hazel sit on the studio floor surrounded by Marshall amps, sent all musicians out, stayed himself, playing the few keyboard notes, and told Hazel to play like his mother had died. _________________ I Have Pledged My Life To Saving The Fuzzy Bunnies From The Bad Toys Always be ready to speak your mind, and a base man will avoid you. - Blake

"Free your mind and your ass will follow" Wise words from the Funk Meister himself. Clinton is a gas. Thanks for that. My favorite club in the 70s, The Spot, in Ft. Worth, used to play all of Fundadelic stuff. White women got in free, no cover charge Bad, I know.
